Ringing in the New Year with the HEPP & Upward Bound Program January 19, 2019

For most people, the ringing in of a new year often means making resolutions: a new diet, a new job, more exercise, volunteering somewhere, being more patient or perhaps more fiscally responsible. What ever the resolutions, we often find ourselves looking back at the past and looking forward to the new. Often reflecting on self and setting goals for improvement. For me as a college consultant it is THE deadline...January 1st, the date many colleges have set as the deadline for their applications. For me, January also signals that it is time to offer my workshop for the HEPP & Upward Bound Program. This is a federally funded program designed to help low income, underrepresented first generation college bound high school students. It is designed to improve academic success, motivational levels and self confidence in order to help students set and reach their ultimate goals of achieving a college degree. As part of my dedication to college accessibility, I will be donating the workshop which will cover the college application process and how to research good fit college majors. It will be held at LeMoyne College as part of the Saturday Scholastic Academy College Preparatory Curriculum offered by Hepp & Upward Bound.

There are many out there for whom college is a very precarious proposition. Not necessarily because they lack the talent or intellect but they may lack resources, or support of a an adult who knows how to navigate what can be at times an overwhelming process. I feel that college accessibility is important for our society. So as my college students' acceptances role in, and they find themselves lucky enough to have choices, I like to keep in mind that not everybody is in this position. I hope to help in some small way.
