College of the Week: University of Delaware

At the end of this week, I will be traveling to Delaware for my daughter's soccer tournament. It is a good time to explore colleges as well. I decided to do a little homework before we check out the University of Delaware. Located in the small city of Newark Delaware, The "Fiske's Guide to Colleges" describes the University of Delaware as a "public gem with a small town feel and the offerings of a big university". It's undergraduate enrollment is approximately 16,000 students and it boasts of 145 solid academic majors, including both liberal arts and science degrees as well as degrees in Finance, Education, Engineering, Music, Nursing , Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising , Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Landscape Design ( check out my Major of The Week post)! Along with the typical college courses, students are required to earn credits in experiential learning such as internships, research or study abroad. 45 percent of the students live on campus. The student body is described as somewhat preppy. There is a strong Greek Life and although they are not particularly known for their sports, they are part of the NCAA, Division I and football is big and gaining in popularity. The campus is located on l,000 acres. ACT scores range from 24-29, the average new SAT scores range from 1180-1370 ( out of 1600).
